Building Raised Garden Beds & Seed Giveaway

By : | 110 Comments | On : April 6, 2015 | Category : Contests, DIY, Nature

It looked like it would be a nice day weather wise, so Kevin & I got to work building a few raised beds for the garden. We started just in time to finish it off before the rain came!

We cut a few trees in an area that needed clearing and chose a bunch that were of similar size.

We had a few piles of lumber that had to be moved to another area. We chose this spot because it gets good light all day long in the summer and is close to the hose, shed and compost bin.

We laid out the basic arrangement to see how it would work.

When we were happy with it, we cut the logs to length. The main box is 11′ x 10′. The smaller beds are 11′ x 4.5′.

We laid down the 2 end logs and placed the 2 side logs on top, making sure the ends were flush. I held the logs in place while Kevin used the chainsaw to cut straight through, making perfectly mitered corners (or at least rustic mitered corners!).

The corners were nailed together from either side using 3.5″ common nails. We measured the distance from the fence and between each bed to get everything spaced properly, adjusting as needed.

We then repeated the procedure forming a second layer on the beds.

Kevin gave the lawn inside the boxes a real close weed whacking before we called it a day.

I love the rustic look of the raised beds!!

Soon I’ll be planting all kinds of vegetables and herbs including a matching set of seeds from the giveaway below!

You might be surprised how much you can grow in a small space. I used to grow several vegetable and herb plants on a small balcony using vertical gardening techniques. Good luck!

I LOVE the look of your raised garden beds. We’re looking forward to starting our first garden in our new house this year… I might have to beg the hubby to make at least one of our raised beds out of rustic wood, it’s soo much nicer than the standard cedar 4×4’s.

That’s awesome. I remember being so excited to garden as a kid (I think I was 5) that I swiped my mom’s sunflower seeds and planted about 30 of them all around our work shed. They ALL grew and the place was surrounded by 6 foot sunflowers. I LOVED it. LOL.

We told her it needs to be small, I suggested planting a raised garden(that’s how my Dad did his), I think it would be easier for her being it’d be her first one. My FIL plants a large garden & I would share some of these seeds with him as well.
