Basic White Bread or Buns
2014-05-30- Yield : One 2 lb. loaf or 8 large buns
Easy-peasy daily bread recipe, great for sandwiches or for days you just want quick and simple.
I’ve made many variations to this one over the years and it adapts well and is quite forgiving.
I often use my bread machine to mix it, then divide it into 8 buns before letting it rise (then bake at 350 F for 14 minutes on a greased or floured sheet.) The buns are a staple item in our home!
I use 1/2 c. whole wheat flour to replace 1/2 c. AP flour, or throw in 1/4 c. of finely chopped onion for a change once in a while.
Ingredients
- 1 1/8 cups lukewarm water
- 1 1/2 tbsp. butter
- 2 2/3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tbsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 1/4 tsps. bread machine (or dry active) yeast
Method
Step 1
Place in bread machine in order listed and use white bread settings, or dough settings for buns.
Step 2
For buns: After dough cycle is complete, remove dough to floured surface.
Step 3
Divide into 8 - 12 buns. 8 buns will give you hamburger sized buns, 12 for dinner rolls.
Step 4
Shape into balls, tucking dough around all edges to the bottom.
Step 5
Place on greased or floured baking sheet in oven with light on and door closed until doubled in size.
Step 6
Bake at 350 for 14 - 16 mins. Buns are done when tops are golden and they sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
