This was my grandmothers recipe for dumplings, and still my go to.

What is really interesting about this one is the way she wrote it (in a handwritten book, over 100 years old!!), not only does it make amazing dumplings, but there are adaptations to make pancakes, scones or cake.:)

If you’re interested in trying them, the dumplings make the base recipe, then:

For Pancakes; add more milk to proper consistency.

For Scones; add up to 1/4 cup sugar and up to 1 tsp vanilla extract

For Irish Apple Cake; add 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and apple slices.

Bake in greased pan at 350 F for about 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsps. butter, lard, or oil
  • about 1/2 cup water or milk

Method

Step 1

Mix dry ingredients and cut in lard.

Step 2

Make a well in center, add egg. Mix.

Step 3

Slowly add water/milk just until dough becomes kneadable.

Step 4

Drop in approximately 12 equal portions on top of hot stew. Cover and cook about 12 - 15 minutes.
