Pita Bread

Quick and easy home made pita bread. The batch pictured is all purpose flour with 1 cup whole wheat substitution. Enough to add a bit more nutrients without anyone noticing…;)

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour, or substitute up to 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsps. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Method

Step 1

Mix 2 cups flour with water and yeast.

Step 2

Mix in salt.

Step 3

Work in remaining flour until dough pulls away from sides of bowl.

Step 4

Turn onto floured surface and knead 5 minutes.

Step 5

Cut into 10 equal portions and roll into balls.

Step 6

Flour counter and top of dough ball lightly, roll out to 1/4" thickness and 6" diameter.

Step 7

Place on baking sheets sprinkled with flour or cornmeal. Let rise 35 minutes in oven with light on and covered with a tea towel.

Step 8

Remove from oven to preheat to 500F. Bake on lowest rack in oven for 5 minutes.

Step 9

Place on rack and cover with tea towel for first 3 minutes. Remove towel and allow to cool completely.
