Schlumbergera (Christmas Cactus)

christmas cactus

Gorgeous isn’t it?

Also the name is fabulous. Schlumbergera, great word right? LOL.

The Christmas Cactus belongs to the Schlumbergera genus and blooms when the light and dark cycle is about even, and the evenings are cool.

They require very little care, if anything you are more likely to overwater than underwater this hardy Brazilian cactus.

They are simple to propagate, don’t need much care and have the most amazing blooms in the dead of winter (right when a lot of us could use a little color!) making them an almost ideal houseplant.

Mine has blooms coming out all over the place right now. Most of them are just beginning, but this one flower decided to have a show all to itself…

This is a beautiful Christmas Cactus! I love the colour…it’s definitely my favourite! And, you’re right about needing a little colour in the coldest months of the year! Thanks for bringing in some warmth!!!

I always miss my garden during winter, so it does bring some warmth when it’s -20 outside and you have flowers blooming indoors!

They propagate very easily too, if you know someone who has one, just ask for a few segments, they root easily in soil & peat moss or in water.
